Analysis of an Industry Website: Insomniac Games

I’ve known about Insomniac Games since the very first Spyro game came out in 1998. Then I was introduced to Ratchet and Clank and I became a diehard fan of the studio. I’ve watched them grow from a small company into one that has sold over 35 million console video games worldwide. It is one of the most successful video game developers today and their website shows it.

A huge banner that takes up one-third of the page is the first thing that greets you when the web site loads. The banner cycles between fourteen different notices that promote each of the company’s games along with company news and features. Each banner is memorable either because of the artwork used or the subject being promoted. If a particular banner sparks a desire to know more all you have to do is click it and you’ll be taken to an area where you’ll find more information on the subject.

Above the banner is the Insomniac Games logo along with text links to the various sections of the website. The section is clutter-free and provides quick and easy to find navigation between the sections of the website. Below the banner are a variety of sections that expand upon the news and information highlighted in the banner. Each section is minimal in presentation, highlighting the information presented. A quick glance will tell you if anything there merits a more thorough examination.

The whole website has a very clean design that puts the important information up front. The navigation is intuitive so finding an article or podcast is easy. I like that they offer a community forum alongside industry research and development articles. They understand how varied their audience is and embrace that variety. It’s obvious that the attention to detail they put into their game was also put into their website.
